Tasting Notes:
  • Color bright red with high intensity and brightness.
  • In nose , besides red and ripe black fruits, the balsamico character and aromatic herbs (thyme, rosemary, lavender, fennel) stands out. It shows, also, a marked mineral character with a background of very fine and well integrated woods.
  • In mouth is thin and powerful at the same time, in addition to being very bulky. It emphasizes a great balance between fruit and oak. Postgusto long and intense final. Muymaduro and tasty.

Elaboration and Aging:

In order to elaborate the Contador, we took into account the climatic year and the maturation stage of the grapes, selecting the vineyards that had the clusters with the optimal characteristics, looking for the balance between acidity, alcoholic degree and tannin. It is made with grapes of the varieties Tempranillo, Graciano Y Mazuelo , El Hoyo Barbera, El Bardallo, El Bosque, Hoyo Ábalos, San Juan, Corrales, El Bombon, Murmuron and El Sauco, located in the municipalities of San Vicente de la Sonsierra, Labastida, Briones and Abalos, in Rioja Alavesa , which belong to the DOCa. Rioja.

Harvested by hand, by lifelong harvesters, experts in carefully cutting the clusters. The grapes are transported to the cellar in small boxes. Once there, a manual selection of clusters begins and, after destemming, manual selection of grains, which are lifted up to the mouth of the fermentation vessels in small containers. Fermentation is produced at controlled temperature in French oak barrels of 10,000 liters capacity. The emptying of the tanks as well as the filling of the barrels is also carried out by gravity. The wine performs malolactic fermentation and aging for 18 months , in new oak barrels france . During this period, several racking and weekly fillings are performed to compensate the losses that occur in a room with a moderate degree of humidity (65%). All movements of the wine are made taking into account the lunar cycles.

Curiosities:

A wine that gets its name from a small room that is at the entrance of the cave, which was used to count goatskin when the wine was transported over the shoulder. When the wine was put in and when the wine was extracted, it was necessary to compute the capacity of each skin to know the wine that was moving, and when they sold it also served to count the wine they had sold and the money of the transaction. As the draft of the cave reaches the clock tower of the church, the logo of the wine are the bells of the clock, because under it is the cave where the wineries were born Counter, and because it is also a timer. One of the most awarded wines of the B. Romeo, a Rioja for special occasions, a wine that never fails, and that can not miss in any wine cellar.

For many Benjamin Romeo is the "wine wizard". He began as a wine grower who worked for large wineries as Artadi , and after almost 20 years of the beginning of his personal project with the Bodega Contador , has achieved that its wines are in the letters of the most expensive restaurants of the world. In 1995 Benjamin acquires a centennial cave under the castle of San Vicente de la Sonsierra (La Rioja) . In 1996 he elaborates the first crop of the Cueva del Contador and begins to buy vinas. Meanwhile, to increase the capacity of the cave, the garage of the house of his parents, Andres Romeo and Carmen Hilera, who has dedicated some of his wines, has been conditioned. His international recognition comes through the American critic Robert Parker, who gives 100 points to the 2004 and 2005 harvests of the wine "Contador", made in the garage. Being the maximum qualification granted to a Rioja wine, until then .
