Why Spanish wine and not French or Italian one?

Why Spanish wine and not French or Italian one?

More precise law than in Italy

The main reason why French wines are recognisable is advertising. We have closer economic relations with those countriesi, so we make the hay and buy wine as well. We are not even going to mention French wine law, as it is complicated, unclear and full of gaps. In case of Italy, there is law that regulates every single aspect of vineyards and wineries working. In Spain, however, we have to be prepared for an unexpected control both in the winery and later, during each and every single wine making stage. If control’s results are negative, producer loses his authorization, and it is practically impossible to get it back. That is the reason why if one decides to make wine, puts all his heart into it.

More or less? What is better?

Lenin postulated, that at some point supremacy of quantity will turn itself into quality. If French and Italian wines were really better than Spanish ones, that could be an evidence. Why? Let’s take a look at FAO data, published in 2015ii:

Grapevine production in million ton

What does it mean in practice? As you remember, the vineyards size is more or less the same. Now imagine, that winemakers in Spain cut the branches, so that there is only one bunch of grapes on each. What for? They want it to accumulate the whole possible taste. More stable production level means better climate, which does not change between seasons. Thanks to that, if you buy Spanish wine, next year you can easily buy another one, labelled the same way, and the taste will not change. This is not a case in France or Italy, if weather is not the best and blending goes wrong.

Wine weather

In La Rioja, the most important wine region in Spain, the vegetative season lasts from March to November, or even to the beginning of December. In the most important regions in France or Italy, from March to first half of October and from second half of April to the end of November, accordingly (consecutively Montpellier in Languedoc and city of Siena in Tuscany region, all data by holidaycheck.pl). Longer vegetative season means more mature grapes and a chance for fuller, better wine.

Voice of experts

Spanish wines are well known for their full taste, often a bit heavier with fruity and flowery notes on a deep tannin base. They owe it to the rigorous care taken of grapevines and to the traditional recipe – in Spain they attach greater importance to tradition than in Italy or France, set for mass export. Although La Rioja is the most famous region on Spanish wine map, it is definitely worth trying wines from different regions. They differ from each other more than the most commercialised, the most known French and Italian wines. The key to understanding Spanish wines is their taste, where quality is not supposed to turn into quantity and producers look for taste in wine, not only money, like it happens in other countries, as shown by press reports about wine forging.
